Why Use Handmade Soap?

What is handmade soap?

Soap is a product of the chemical reaction between fat and/or oil, liquid and lye. Lye is more accurately known as Sodium Hydroxide, a caustic chemical.

Yes, I know what is going on in that little mind. No one wants chemical on their skin. Neither do I.

A correctly crafted and cured soap would not have any residue chemical left in it. Once Lye interact with oil, it will go through the process of saponification and walla, you get soap.

Our handmade soap is made from scratch with a method called cold process soap-making. The cold process soap method takes a little more time and effort, but it definitely creates the highest quality, mildest bar of soap.

Why use Handmade Soap?

Most commercial ‘soap’ contain ‘unknown’ ingredients that are ranges from harsh detergents, hardening agents and even synthetic lathering agents. Some of these ingredients can be drying or irritating on the skin.

Not everyone is a chemist who can understand the long and tiny ingredients listed on the labels, not to mention those that were undisclosed. But please pay a little extra attention to at least these commonly found ingredients in commercial ‘soap’ because you do not want it in your soap :-

  • Parabens (synthetic preservatives) have been linked to breast tumours.

  • Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS or synthetic detergent) is known to be hormone disruptor. SLS is the one responsible to give you that ‘squeaky clean’ feel after shower. Why? Because it strips off everything including the protective layers of oil that our body produces to keep us moisturised.

Chemical that harms our bodies is also causing serious damage the Earth. Because of the vast use of these chemical in beauty care and cleaning agents, dangerous chemicals are found in lakes, rivers and oceans. Imagine it going into our food chain.

Handmade soap by contrast is made simply with natural skin loving ingredients such as vegetable oils / butters that are soothing and moisturizing. They help to protect and provide our skin with vitamins and nutrients. Every combination of oils such as coconut oil, olive oil and avocado oil, makes each bar completely unique and customisable to exactly to your preference.

Handmade soap also consists of glycerin, a natural by-product in soap making process. Glycerin is a natural humectant that attracts moisture from the air to the skin, keeping your skin moisture. Yes, commercial soap should also have glycerin in it but some was removed to be sold separately in lotion/cream form. So why spend more when handmade soap had already packed with that goodness?

In addition to all that, handmade soap can be made with herbs, botanical, and therapeutic plant essential oils which add delightful aromas and healing properties. Yes, commercial ‘soap’ may smell good and the choice is never ending. But these are synthetic perfume added to increase the marketability of the product not for the benefit of it. Comparatively, we only use essential oil in our handmade soap hence ensuring only the best is applied to your skin.

Skin is our largest organ and it is also porous and absorbent. We do not want any unknown chemical to be drawn through the skin and transferred into the bloodstream, causing concerning long-term damage both known and unknown. Now that you know slightly more about the soap you and your family use daily, think twice and do yourself some good.

What goes on your body is as important as what goes into your body. Lather up with something safe.
